 I was Mark’s NYC roommate on Bleecker St. for about 2 years. I had just returned from the Peace Corps and was ready to explore NYC my birthplace city. I maintained his apartment when he went on his summer adventures to Colorado, absorbed his stories of Germany, let him peruse my vast baseball card collection, and worked for him when he managed a moving and storage company. I introduced to the backwoods scene of the “upscale” Hampton, Long Island as I had worked there as a house framer carpenter for 5 years. He loved that location  and would periodically take the LIRR train to Southampton and walk until he arrived at my friend’s rental home. I miss that guy, feel he was like an older brother, and I miss playing guitar for him- a hobby I’ve picked up with a vengeance.

Over the years Mark and I would see each other, from time to time in different places. Terre Haute, San Francisco. During the Summer of Love he and I and a pal of his went up to the Haight Ashbury to explore the hippie scene. The best memory I have of that adventure was of posing before a large curved mirror out on the street, the kind that greatly distorts the reflected image, and with our stomachs thus extended, uncontrolably laughing, Mark took several photos of us while posing himself. I was fond of Mark and frankly thought he was a great guy. I admired his independence and adventuresome spirit. And, so far as I know, he was always kind.

I met Mark 1992 at the H Bar G Ranch Hostel in Colorado for the first time. He was so friendly, helpful and funny and was very interested in German literature, and we would talk a lot about it. We also met once in NYC in 1996. I have great memories of him.

Mark was a patient here at the VA and I would schedule him for appointments. We would talk for 30- 40 minutes at a time. He was such a great man, very sweet and great to talk to.  He knew I was German and he would tell me about being stationed there and gave a German book
 I will cherish it forever!! 

I never saw Mark after high school but always thought he was such a nice guy.  So sorry to hear of his passing.  Condolences to his family and friends.
