Joe L. Mattox

Joseph L. Mattox, 66, of Terre Haute passed away in his home surrounded by family on Monday morning April 17, 2017. Joe was born January 14, 1951 to Chet and Betty (Smeja) Mattox in Terre Haute. He grew up in Fontanet in his parents funeral home. He attended Fontanet School, Otter Creek, and graduated from Garfield High School in 1969. He then attended Indiana State University and graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science.

Joe spent his entire life in funeral service. He along with his wife, Linda, owned Mattox Funeral Home in Fontanet, Mattox-Wood Funeral Home in North Terre Haute, Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, Mattox-Bedino Funeral Home in West Terre Haute, Mattox-Bedino Peace Chapel in Terre Haute, Mattox-Fox Riley Chapel in Riley, Mattox-McHugh Funeral Homes in Shelburn and Hymera, and Mattox-Fidler Funeral Home in Farmersburg.

Joe was a former board member of Hospice of the Wabash Valley and County Board of Zoning Appeals. He was a former member of the Terre Haute Downtown Rotary Club and Terre Haute Breakfast Optimist Club. He was also a member of Indiana Funeral Directors Association along with other various organizations

Joe loved life, hunting, and the outdoors, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and his church, Higher Ground Christian Center, where he devoted his life to pastoring after retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Mattox. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda (Church) Mattox, daughter and son-in-law Amy and Zac Warner, son Adam Mattox, daughter and son-in-law Angie and Mark Poole, sister Diana Haltom, grandchildren Elizabeth Poole, Evan Poole, Cooper Warner, Colt Warner, mother-in-law Mary Lou Church, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday April 20th at Higher Ground Christian Center, 8983 E Rio Grande Ave. with Reverend Bill Herb officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, April 19th, from 4-8pm at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
