James “Jay” Staley, 71, of Terre Haute, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at his home. He was born on June 9, 1947, in Terre Haute to Bradley and Virginia (Higgins) Staley. He married Suzanne Mace on June 25, 1969.
Jay is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Sue Staley of Terre Haute; sons, James Jay Staley II and wife Charlotte of Terre Haute and David Aaron Staley and wife Dawn of South Dakota; grandson, James Aaron Staley, currently serving in the U.S. Army in Colorado; siblings, Mary Shaffner of Martinsville, IL, Jim Doyle of Arkansas, and Rod Staley of Indianapolis; sisters-in-law, Lea Lucas of Nashville, TN, Pam Fellows of Mecca, Cindy Caton of Terre Haute, and Sally Haskell of McMinville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Peggy Targett; and his twin brother, Brad Staley.
Jay was a graduate of Wiley High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1967 – 1970. After his service to his country, Jay began his career and continued his education while raising a family with his wife, Sue. He graduated Cum Laude in 1974 from Indiana State University in 3 ½ years with a degree in Industrial Electronics Technology. He worked for GTE/Verizon from 1970 until his retirement in 2010.
In his spare time, Jay loved to go camping and boating. He enjoyed traveling and was always looking forward to his next adventure. He cherished the time he spent with his family. Although he was a man of few words, he always made sure that his family knew how much he loved them. He will be truly missed.
