Catherine “Ann” Akers, 76, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014. She retired as a social worker for the State of Indiana after many years of service. She was born Feb. 4, 1938, in Pana, Ill., to Calvin Sickles and Ruth I. Newton Sickles. Her husband, James Akers, whom she married on Dec. 9, 1953, in Rockville, preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2011.
Survivors include her two sons, Ralph Akers and his wife Georgann and Ron Akers and his wife Tammie, all of West Terre Haute; a daughter, Susan McCarty and her husband Max of West Terre Haute; a sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Billy Parker of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Bradley Akers and his wife Amy, Kellie Akers, Kilee Akers, Dylan Akers, Danielle Montgomery and her husband Charlie, and Travis McCarty and his wife Dorothy; and 14 great-grandchildren and one on the way.
She was a member of the Vigo County Tax Board. She was a founding officer of the L & S Water Corporation and a member of Delta Sigma PI Sorority. She also loved music and dancing.
A celebration of life service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in Terre Haute First Baptist Church, 4701 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, with Pastor Bernie Jackson officiating. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday in the church. Entombment of her ashes will be at a later date in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park. Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, West Terre Haute, assisted with arrangements.
