Billie was born on December 11, 1919, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Raymond and Grace Melvin. He worked on the Milwaukee Railroad for 41 years and also for the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 157. Billie was an Army Veteran of World War II, a member of Masonic Lodge 86, a member of Old Timers Railroad Club, and a retired member of Railroad Men's Club. He was also a member of The Higher Ground Christian Center. Billie and his wife, Betty, were very active in The Foreign Exchange Program.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Melvin, who he married on November 20, 1942; his daughter, Julie West, and her husband, Dale III; a brother, Jim Melvin; three sisters: Linda Ganzel and her husband, Marty; Mary Deitz and her husband, Howard; and Martha Abernathy. Billie had two grandchildren, Jordan and Alysia West; and several nieces and nephews.
Billie was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Grace; two brothers, Ted Melvin and Joe Melvin; a daughter, Janice Voll; and Robert Overton, who Billie and Betty raised as a son.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the loving and caring staff at Clinton Gardens. Billie was one of their favorite residents, and they really enjoyed his sense of humor.
Services will be Friday, December 27, 2013, at 1:00pm at The Higher Ground Christian Center Church with a visitation on Friday from 11:00am-1:00pm at the church. Officiating will be Pastor Joe Mattox with burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
