Mrs. Barbara Thompson Houston, age 80, of Aragon, Georgia, passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023. Barbara's heart always belonged to her hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana, where she chose to retire many years ago.
Barbara was born on April 17, 1943, to the late Raymond Thompson and Anna Rittenhouse Thompson. She dedicated her life to loving and caring for her family.
Barbara held many interests and talents. An accomplished gardener, she spent countless hours nurturing her plants and flowers. Her love for animals was equally profound, treating them as an extension of her family, showered with unconditional love.
Barbara was known for her keen eye as an experienced shopper. Whether antiquing or thrift store shopping, each trip was a grand adventure for her and her beloved Krissy. She was always on the lookout for treasures, never letting a good yard sale pass her by!
Barbara was also passionate about her political views and was actively involved in local politics. She served as a precinct committeewoman for many years, and her unwavering dedication to her beliefs earned her respect in the community. She was a die-hard Democrat and proud of it!
In her later years, Barbara bravely faced the challenges of Dementia, a disease that compromised the last several years of her life. Despite its ravages, it could not steal her feistiness, and she fought it with courage and grace. During this season, she made new friends and acquaintances in Georgia, bonding deeply with her daughter and son-in-law, who were her devoted caregivers, and she continually kept them on their toes! Her vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met during this time, endearing her to all.
Barbara leaves behind a gaping void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, William S. Houston, and her son, James W. Henderson.
Her legacy is carried on by her daughter, Jill Henderson Essigmann, and her husband, Butch; her very special daughter, Kristina Houston; her son, Mark Houston and his partner, Leslie. Barbara was a loving and caring grandmother to several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who will always remember her for her wit and wisdom!
A memorial service to honor the extraordinary life of Barbara Thompson Houston will be held in the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Terre Haute, IN on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 11:00 AM. Her life and spirit will be celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
