Avelena F. Gildermeister, age 96, of Danielsville, Ga., passed away Jan. 12, 2015, at 8:30 p.m. at Ty Cobb Health and Rehabilitation Center in Commer, Ga. She was born Nov. 19, 1920, to Charles Peterson and Goldie Gilmore in Tillamook, Ore.
She was a lifelong member of the Moose Club. She was self-employed most of her life running a restaurant and bar in LaCrosse, Wis. She raced stock cars when she was very young, having her own B1 stock car. She was a loving mother and grandmother to all of her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Sobkowiak of Terre Haute; one sister, Elizabeth of Readding, Calif.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had five brothers, Chesley Peterson, Roy Peterson, Charlie Peterson, Darrel Peterson, and Alfred Peterson; one sister, Elizabeth; children, James Haggard (wife Hoa), Naomi Barnett, and Shirley Sobkowiak; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Gildermeister; son, James Haggard; daughter, Naomi Barnett; five brothers; and four of her grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be at the North Diamond Hall, 4212 E. Park Ave., at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 17, and following the burial service. A cremation burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park in North Terre Haute at 3 p.m. today.
