Robert Passmore Smylie, 66, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2012 in Temple, Texas. Military graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2012 at Bellwood Memorial Park, Temple, Texas with Chaplain Mark Wilburn officiating. Robert was born May 21, 1946 in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Smylie received a BBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate of the UT Army ROTC program; there he received an Armor Officer commission and qualified for the Airborne Badge and Ranger Tab. Mr. Smylie served with the 10th Cavalry, 4th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam. He was then reassigned as Aero Rifle Platoon Leader of the 1/10 Cavalry. Recognized for his leadership and devotion to the men in his command, Mr. Smylie earned the rank of Captain along with the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Air Medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Smylie served his country with Honor and Valor until his return to the United States in late 1971. Upon returning to Austin, he earned his license to practice as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1981 he became the sole proprietor of Republic Bancorp, Inc., Austin, for many years before retiring to Belton, Texas. Mr. Smylie's survivors include his a sister, Jacqueline Herbst(Karl), two brothers, Ben and Harper Smylie(Carol); numerous nephews; several grand nieces and nephews and his beloved former spouse and dearest friend Susan Richardson Smylie. Bob was very proud to be a life-long Texan; he will forever be deeply loved and missed. Shamrock Ground out. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.
