Norbert Lavern Hansen, a resident of Temple, Texas, died February 8, 2017. Norbert was born June 26, 1932 in the Town of Rock, Wisconsin, the youngest of four children of Arthur and Calla Hansen. Norbert attended Rock Elementary School and Marshfield High School. As a youth, Norbert worked on the family farm, eventually taking a job with the Nasonville Dairy where he picked up and delivered milk cans from the local dairy farms. He later earned his cheesemaker license. On August 2, 1952 Norbert married Iona Klawitter of Marshfield, Wisconsin. They were married over 51 years until Iona’s unexpected death in August, 2003. Iona was Norby’s great love- he never remarried. Norbert joined the U.S. Army May, 1953 and was assigned to a field artillery unit in Germany where he worked as a cook. He was honorably discharged in April, 1955 and returned to Marshfield. He began a baker apprenticeship with Karau’s Supermarket in December, 1956. Upon completion in June, 1959, Norbert moved his family to Adams, Wisconsin and opened A-F Bakery, which he owned and operated for 25 years until it closed in January, 1984. In March, 1984 he began working for M&I Bank in Adams until his retirement in June, 1998. During that same period from 1986-1997, Norbert managed a motel at the Adams railyard for Motel Sleepers, Inc. Norbert remained in the Adams-Friendship area until 2009, moving to Wisconsin Rapids and ultimately to Temple, Texas in 2012. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Calla, his wife Iona and brother Orville Hansen of Marshfield. Norbert is survived by: 2 sisters, Arlene Schrader of Newburgh, Indiana and Myrtle Pleckham of Kankakee, Illinois.
3 sons, Steven and his wife Ellen, of Temple, Texas; Michael and his wife Dee, of Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin; and Mark of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
5 grandchildren, Stacy Sorensen of Oswego, Illinois; Angela Olson of Dayton, Minnesota; Hillary Henson of Red Oak, Texas; Luke Reed of Houston, Texas; and Haley Brinkley of Phoenix, Arizona. 11 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Abigail and Rachel Sorensen of Oswego, Illinois; Dylan and Allyson Witz of Dayton, Minnesota; Alina Burgess and Vincent Henson of Red Oak, Texas; Natasha and Lucas Reed of Houston, Texas; and Layla Brinkley of Phoenix, Arizona.
Norbert volunteered at the Adams, Wisconsin Senior Center, delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program and at McLane Children Medical Center in Temple, Texas where he baked and delivered cookies to patients and families, always with a smile. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 133 in Temple, Texas. Norbert was respected for his amazing work ethic and loved for his kind, curious nature and as a teller of great life stories. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
