Nathan Calvin Mayes, 87, of Temple passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 28, 2014 in Temple.
Services for Mr. Mayes will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Greathouse Cemetery in Temple, Texas with Dr. Phil Schuler officiating.
Nathan was born in Bell County, Texas on July 11, 1927 to Nathan Wiley and Pearl Calvin Lewis Mayes.
He attended school in the Berea community and graduated from Belton High School in 1945.
Mr. Mayes served in the Army from 1946-1947.
He married Betty Louise Beechem in Heidenheimer, Texas in 1948. Nathan worked for the Southland Coorporation( 7-11 Food Stores), Ray’s drive-in grocery and Bandy Laboratories in Temple.
He ended his working career as a Building Superintendent at the 1st Baptist Church in Temple.
Mr. Mayes loved wood working and made beautiful hand-crafted butterflies and “whirligigs”.
Nathan was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty of Temple, one son Mike Mayes and his wife Kathy of Buckholts, a grandson Justin Michael Mayes, a granddaughter Keely Ann Mayes, and two grandsons Byron Thomas Covington and Kevin Randall Covington.
He is also survived by a great-granddaughter Kayce Jo Mayes and a great-grandson Hunter Gage Mayes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Greathouse Cemetery at PO Box 2154 Belton, Texas 76513.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Temple is in charge of the arrangements.
