John was born to Frank and Ola Glover in his grandparents’ home, February 06, 1926 in Gonzales, Texas. He attended Gonzales Public Schools graduating in 1943 at which time he enlisted in the navy where he served in the Asiatic Pacific campaign from 1944 through 1945. At the end of the war, while stationed in Oakland, California, John met Marilyn LeRoy on a blind date and was married 6 months later in Seguin, Texas. John obtained his Bachelor of Science in Education and Masters in Educational Administration from Southwest Texas State University. He taught and coached at La Grange High school in 1950-1951 before moving to Liberty, New York from 1951 to 1953 where he taught prisoners at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility during the day and parked cars for sports and show biz celebrities at the Grossingers’ Catskill Resort Hotel during the evenings. In 1954, he moved his family back to Texas where he began his eighteen year teaching and coaching job at Academy High School. After 18 successful years of teaching and coaching at Academy High he worked for the Temple School District in several roles for two years, county counselor for small schools for one year, Rogers High Principal for 4 years and Academy High Principal for four years at the end of which he retired in 1982. In 1993, the football stadium was name in his honor and rededicated in his honor in 2013. He spent his retirement “piddling” around his eleven acre homestead and traveling with his wife and friends.
If you met John Glover and wanted to visit for just a few minutes you made sure you stayed away from the subjects of sports, history or politics or you would be there for a much longer period of time. His gift was seeing the positive in a person and getting that person to find a way to see it too. He did not allow you to hide from the truth, but encouraged you to embrace it and develop a plan to move on from there. He loved the game of football because it was a team sport that allowed boys to become men and accomplish goals not possible as individuals.
Mr. Glover is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Leroy Glover. John has a daughter, Pamela Glover, a son, William Glover and his wife, Robin, another son, Robert Glover along with a sister, Alice Adcock and a sister-in-law Vickie Underwood.
