It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry Garland Knight, Sr., affectionately known as “Big Jerry,” on March 24, 2025. He was born in Waco, Texas, on November 15, 1951, to Garland and Effie Russell Knight.
Jerry’s early years were spent in Nolanville, Texas, before his family moved to Temple, Texas, where he attended Temple High School. In 1969, Jerry welcomed his first son, David. In 1976, Jerry met the love of his life, Cindy Sladek, and they married that same year, beginning a lifelong partnership.
Jerry was a hardworking and dedicated individual. He owned and operated Sonic Drive-In on 57th Street in Temple from 1975 to 1980, a venture that he took great pride in. He later worked in construction before retiring to embrace his role as a house husband. Jerry was a loving father to his son, Jerry Knight, Jr., born in 1984, and passed away on March 24, 2022. Jerry cherished the time spent with his family, especially his beloved Boston Terriers and classic cars.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Effie Knight; his in-laws, Shirley and Winfred Sladek; and his son, Jerry Knight, Jr.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Cindy Knight; his son, David Knight and wife Kathleen of Waco; his daughter-in-law, Teri Knight of Temple; and his three grandchildren, Davy Knight, Tyler Knight, and Kaylee Knight.
