James R. Cumby of Salado passed away at his home, surrounded by family and close friends on July 28, 2017 at the age of 59 years. A memorial service will be held August 7 at Temple Bible Church. A Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m. with minister Gary DeSalvo officiating. He was born on August 3, 1957 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the son of Charles Cleburn Cumby and Betty Dow Cumby. He graduated from Warren Woods High School and began working for the railroad at age 19. He spent 42 years in the railroad industry. He worked for Conrail as a Brakeman and Conductor and then as a Yardmaster where he held seniority and was a member of the Sheet Metal and Rail Transportation (SMART)-Transportation Division Local Lodge #1962. For the majority of his career, he served as an international officer for the SMART union, representing railroad workers across the country. He met his wife Shelly through their mutual work for the railroad. They were married December 27, 2008 in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Since that time, Jim called Salado home, where he left his footprint. Cumby was a member of Temple Bible Church, serving there as an usher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was made a Master Mason on Sept. 30, 2000 at High Twelve #577 in Michigan, which was consolidated with Center Line Lodge #500 in Madison Heights, Michigan in 2003. He affiliated with Salado Lodge #296 in 2012. His father is a Mason and his father-in-law, the late Dean Dunning, was a Mason here in Salado. He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Dow Cumby. He is survived by his wife Shelly, his father Charles and Vera of Tennesse. He is also survived by his daughter Amanda Cumby and granddaughter Madison Cumby. He is also survived by his brothers Dave and Diane Cumby of Michigan, Joe and Lisa Cumby of Michigan, Ron Ransom and Brenda of Tennessee, Mike and Gail Ransom of Tennessee and Danny and Sheryl Ransom of Tennessee and 10 nieces and nephews. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Salado Lodge #296, PO Box 23, Salado, TX 76571 or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Services are under the direction of Scanio-Harper Funeral Home of Temple.
