Glen Owens Brindley entered peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 1, 2018 and surely heard the words he longed to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant." He was born on September 3, 1949 in Memphis, Tennessee. His parents were Dr. Hanes Hanby and Julia (Judy) Barton Brindley. The family moved to Temple, Texas in 1950 to continue a long legacy of physicians at Scott & White. Dr. Brindley passing marks the end of an era of continuous patient care by the Drs. Brindley which began when his grandfather, Dr. G.V. Brindley, Sr. came to Scott and White in 1911. Dr. Brindley married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Nell Fischer Brindley (Nelly) on May 31, 1969 in Temple, Texas. They were happily and faithfully married for 49 years. From this beloved union two daughters were born, Amy Owens and Anne Houghton Brindley. Dr. Brindley attended public school in Temple, Texas graduating from Temple High School in 1967 and Temple Junior College in 1969. He went on to graduate with High Honors from The University of Texas at Austin with a BA degree in 1971. From there he received his medical education at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, graduating in 1975. He completed an Internal Medicine Internship at UTMB before moving his growing family to Durham, NC for an Ophthalmology Residency at the Duke Eye Center, completing it in 1979. Following Residency, Dr. Brindley received Fellowship training and Board Certification in Oculoplastic Surgery at The University of California at San Francisco. At the end of his training, he was finally able to return home to Temple, Texas. On July 1, 1980, Dr. Brindley began a long and distinguished career at Scott & White in the field of Ophthalmology. His leadership was quickly recognized and he became the Program Director, serving for 10 years. He was then named Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and served in that capacity 17 years. Early in his practice, it become apparent that the Eye Department needed a Glaucoma specialist, so Dr. Brindley packed up his family and moved back to Durham, NC where he received Glaucoma Fellowship training under the tutelage of his friend and mentor, Dr. M. Bruce Shields, at the Duke Eye Center. Until his passing, Dr. Brindley trained scores of outstanding young doctors, some of whom are serving on the foreign mission field. His stated professional goal was to “Honor God by serving his patients.” He was a beloved, compassionate doctor to hundreds of patients, praying with and for them and seeking to restore not only physical, but spiritual sight as well. Thousands of Gospel tracts left his exam rooms each year spreading seeds of the truth of his Lord Jesus far and wide. Dr. Brindley worshipped and taught classes at Temple Bible Church as well as serving as former President of The Hope Pregnancy Board, former Teaching Leader for Men’s Bible Study Fellowship, and recently on the Mid-Tex Young Life Committee. He held memberships in The Christian Ophthalmology Society where he received the J. Lawton Smith Award. Other professional accomplishments include The American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society, The Chandler-Grant Glaucoma Society, and The Society of Heed Fellows. Throughout his distinguished career he received the Honor Award from The American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Chief’s Award for Resident Education and was included in The Best Doctors in America. Most recently he was honored with the naming of the Glen Brindley Ethics Lecture at the annual Everett R. Veirs Lecture and Ophthalmology Conference. However the passions of his life were his faith and his family. That is the legacy he wished to remain. He and Nell served in some capacity at every church they were a part of. Dr. Brindley’s keen intellect and spiritual gift of teaching were used to train others to know the truth of God’s inerrant, infallible Word, beginning with his family and extending to his residents, Bible Study Fellowship, the TBC Young Married Class, and the marriage small group Bible studies he and Nell led in their home for over 17 years. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, whether deer hunting at the Brindley Ranch in San Saba or cheering them on in athletic competitions or academic achievements or clapping the loudest at dance recitals and band concerts. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nell Fischer Brindley; daughters, Amy Brindley Hendy and husband Sean of Temple, Texas, and Anne Brindley Westmoreland and husband Brad of Waxahachie, Texas; six grandchildren, Emma Arabella Cox, Andrew Brindley Cox, and David Hamilton Cox all of Temple, Texas, Camilla Jane Westmoreland, Andelyn Arabella Westmoreland, and Evie Ozanna Westmoreland of Waxahachie, Texas; two brothers, Dr. Hanes Hanby Brindley, Jr. and wife Rolinda of Temple, Texas, and Dr. George West Brindley and wife Pam of Lubbock, Texas; one sister, Nan Brindley Cuba and husband Don of San Antonio, Texas; one brother-in-law, Tommy Brooks Wilson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers.
