David was born in Chiswick, England on August 27,1952 to Ernest & Sylvia (Pope) Popp. He came by ship to America at the age of two and then spent his formative years in Temple, TX, graduating as a proud member of the Temple High School class of 1970. Shortly after high school graduation, David enlisted in the Air Force and married Patti (Long) Popp. Together they had two daughters, Courtney (Popp) Weynand & Lindsay (Popp) Gath.
David earned a Bachelor’s of Business Degree from the University of Texas at Austin and worked diligently in both the freight and insurance inspection industries. He enjoyed a good game of dominoes, golfing, sporting events, and was a Longhorn fan until the absolute end. His easy-going nature and unique sense of humor were appreciated by many. David took true joy in spending time with “his girls” and their families, and perfected the role of Papa when he became a grandfather. He spent many of his days watching his grandson Bryson playing basketball and football, his granddaughter Finley playing basketball, his granddaughter Eisley starring in theatre productions, and his grandson Everett playing the piano or trombone in many musical performances. They were quite literally the stars in his eyes.
In December of 2022, David was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia which profoundly changed the course of his life. Despite the interruption in his daily routine, he still managed to show up for those in his life in many different ways. In hindsight, it has become incredibly apparent that David prioritized being there for others despite his own circumstances through and through.
After the latest round of treatment for his leukemia, a Covid diagnosis, and a stroke, his body worked so very hard, and he peacefully left this world surrounded by several loved ones on the evening of October 10, 2023.
He will be missed by so many friends and family, but especially his grandkids who always enjoyed a funny moment or two with their Papa. We are all so lucky to have been known and loved by him.
David leaves behind his daughters Courtney Weynand and husband Nicholas of Austin, and Lindsay Gath and husband Mike of Austin, grandsons Bryson and Everett, granddaughters Finley and Eisley, and his beloved dog Daisy. He is also survived by his mother Sylvia Popp of Temple, and siblings Susan Popp of Austin, Geoffrey Popp of Temple, Nanette Popp of Belton, Laura Calhoun and husband Jim of Temple, and Richard Popp and wife Maureen of San Antonio as well as many additional family members that loved and cared for him. He is preceded in death by his father Ernest Popp.
A Celebration of Life followed by visitation with family and friends will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 22nd at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple, TX. Burial service will be held on Monday, October 23rd at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX from 10:00-10:30 a.m.
