Benjamin Hennington Gray III, of Temple, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 while in hospice care for liver failure. He was born on June 17, 1943 to Myrtle and Ben H. Gray, Jr. in Phoenix, Arizona. Ben lived in many different towns and cities in Texas growing up until his family finally settled in Houston. There, he met his longtime sweetheart, Mary Katherine Kerby, freshman year of high school. Ben and Mary married on November 9, 1963 and celebrated 58 years of marriage before her passing in July 2022.
Ben found his true calling in the area of sales as his chosen career. He worked for close to 50 years in the metal building industry. It combined a love of meeting new people and construction which he was perfectly suited for. He truly enjoyed having projects to bid on and loved seeing them come to life! Ben enjoyed many hobbies but the one closest to his heart was woodturning. He loved spending time out in the garage working on different ideas with different species of wood and made many a gift for his family. He also enjoyed golf and music! He was a part of church choir and played the organ as well. Ben was a member of the United Methodist church wherever he lived. Both Ben and Mary had many many friends over the years with the closest friendships made through church. He volunteered in many ways—teaching Sunday School, United Methodist Men, and of course choir! He also was a member of the Houston Jaycees and Freemasons. Of all the qualities Ben possessed, his integrity in his personal and business relationships is the one that stands out.
We are reminded of Proverbs 10:9-“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out”.
Ben is survived by his sister, DarLane Onda and husband Tom; his daughter Katherine Dalton and husband Jay, son David Gray and wife Bernadette; five grandchildren, Kerby Gray, Jessica Dalton Culotta and husband Austin Culotta, Jonah Gray, McGregor Dalton, and Nathan Gray; plus great-granddaughter, Nova Gray, and several nieces and nephews. He loved each one deeply.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 1:00pm at Bear Creek United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bear Creek UMC Youth Department, Houston, TX or the American Liver Foundation.
On behalf of our family, we wish to express gratitude for your many kindnesses evidenced in thought and deed, and for your attendance with us today.
