Timothy D McMurry, 75, of Tampa, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2023. He was born in Gary, Indiana on March 26, 1948, and raised in Portage, IN. He married Sara Boland on March 28, 1987. Tim was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Temple Terrace, for over 30 years. He volunteered in many roles at the Church, including President of the Church Council, and most recently as Chair of Member Care. But his favorite volunteer role was grilling bratwurst alongside his friend, Pat, for the annual Church Oktoberfest. Tim was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and served as Staff Sergeant with the US Army, 1st Cavalry. Tim was awarded The Silver Star, as well as Medals for Meritorious Achievement and Heroism.
Following his military service, Tim moved to Tampa where he earned a BA and an MBA at USF. In later years, he also became a Certified Financial Planner. During his undergraduate years, Tim trained for and became a Journeyman Electrician for the IBEW Local 915 Union. He was a lifelong member of Local 915, serving in various roles including President, and attaining a 45-year service pin.
In 1977, Tim hung up his toolbelt and became the Manager (later President & CEO) of Local 915 Credit Union, where he found his life’s passion in helping members of organized labor and their families manage their finances. As other labor-based unions were brought into the Credit Union, it was renamed PowerNet Credit Union, and Tim would nurture and grow it into the largest labor-based credit union in Florida. Tim was also a board member and officer in several credit union organizations, including the Florida Credit Union League, Southeast Corporate FCU, Corporate One FCU and ADOL.
Tim was a caring man who put the needs of others first, and was always willing to lend a hand. He treated his credit union members like family and was a tireless advocate for their financial well-being. He volunteered his time as a member of the Tampa East Sertoma Club for over 25 years, and served in a number of leadership roles, including President. He was dedicated to his community, walking regularly to pick up trash, and serving as President of the Nuccio Community Council for many years. Tim was also a member of the Temple Terrace Garden Club and enjoyed being a part of a wonderful, active group of people dedicated to enhancing the beauty of their community. Tim loved working in his own yard and, over the years, created a beautiful and serene setting where he simply enjoyed sitting and watching the songbirds, water birds, squirrels, and the occasional alligator cruising by. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he helped and touched.
Tim is predeceased by his parents, Joseph D. and Marie P. McMurry, and survived by his loving wife, Sara Boland McMurry, his sister, Marjorie (David) McMurry Huber, his brother, Danny McMurry, his nieces, Rachel and Angela, and their families, and extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, July 15, at Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 304 Druid Hills Road, Temple Terrace, FL, with a luncheon to follow. The service will also be live-streamed and archived on YouTube. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Christ Our Redeemer Memorial Fund, Moffitt Cancer Center, or LifePath Hospice.
