Born in Jarrell, Texas on Jan 2, 1927 in her parent’s farmhouse, Genie was raised in Granger, Texas and attended school through the 8th grade. Despite her level of formal education, Genie achieved tremendous success during her lifetime.
Genie married Hymie Wolf June 23, 1960 in San Antonio, Texas and they honeymooned in Mexico City. They owned Wolf Aviation and made many trips to Europe in the few short years they were married. They owned and operated a recording studio and the infamous Rio Record Shop in San Antonio. Those were the happiest times of her life. During that time, Genie was extremely involved in the San Antonio community where she was an active member of the Quota Club, represented the Czech Heritage Society in full Czech costume at the Festival of Nations, at the 1968 Hemisphere San Antonio and for many years at the Institute of Texas Cultures Folklife Festival. After Hymie’s passing, Genie continued to manage and operate Rio Record Shop on her own until July 31, 1991 when she retired and moved back to Granger.
Genie helped many families, children, seniors and others in need throughout her life and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Her nickname in her hometown was “the Granger Angel,” and indeed she was.
Genie is preceded in death by her parents John and Mary Karkoska, and brothers Bernard, Jerry,
Johnny Jr., Clement “Red,” Ted, Joe, Frank and nephew John Pershing Karkoska.
