SHIELDS, II, William Walker, died peacefully at his beachside home on July 10, 2014. Bill was born in Chicago, IL before moving to Tampa and attending Plant High School. An unstoppable running back, he won the 1952 Guy Toph Award as the area's top high school football player before attending Tampa University and playing for the Spartans. There he met his wife of 49 years, Beth Carr, who later became the first female Deputy Superintendent in the Hillsborough County School System. Bill later joined his father's roofing business that continues to bear their name, and worked to make it one of Tampa's most successful family roofing companies. Bill Shields Roofing Co. is now in its 64th year, run by Bill's son Doug. Bill's passions spanned from the opera to hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains, but he will be most remembered for his thoughtful deeds in support of the community. Quick to resist praise for charitable work; humility and a kind temperament struck many as Bill's defining qualities. He was a beloved father and devoted husband to the end of his days. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Beth, and oldest son, Bill. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy; son & daughter-in-law, Doug and Vicki; daughter-in-law, Deke; and 6 grandchildren, Brendan, Bill IV, Summer, Ian, John and Hope.
