Lt. Cmdr. William F. Hubbard, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully June 20, 2016 at his home in Lutz. He is survived by his wife, Amelia; sons, Mark (Francine) and Scott (Adriana); step-son, Charles Cabrera (Jona); step-daughters, Malou Smith (Bob) and Marlene Roome (Rich); two grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Shari Lynn. He joined the Navy just after the end of World War II reporting to Naval Flight Training at Pensacola, Florida and then was sent to the USS Princeton. After the Korean War, he flew surveillance missions along the South China Sea and the Aleutian Islands. He retired from active duty in the late 50’s but continued to serve in the Naval Reserve flying combat supply missions into Vietnam in the early 60’s. In 1962, he took a civilian Engineering position with AMF/Voit and then went to work for Boeing as an Aerospace Engineer at Vandenberg AFB. In 1972, he took a position with the US Army Corps of Engineers, reporting to Seoul, Korea where he was sent to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to design and build infrastructure. He was subsequently sent to Moscow, Russia to assist with the rebuild of the American Embassy where he witnessed the 1993 shelling of Parliament by Boris Yeltsin. He served his country humbly and that is simply what a member of the “Greatest Generation” did. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 26, 2016 from 1:30- 2:30pm at the Blount & Curry Funeral Home- Carrollwood Chapel a service to follow at 2:30pm.
