GOODWIN, Sophia Mae, 70, of Tampa passed away on February 20, 2019. She was born on March 15, 1948 in Wheeling, West Virginia to Walter and Mary (Zurek) Slaga. Sophia was the owner and operator of Capt. Sophia’s Fishing Charters in Everglades City, Florida until her retirement. She was the first woman to receive her U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license and Towing license there. Survivors include her loving husband of 20 years, Steve Goodwin of Tampa; son, James Lascik, HMCS (SS,Ret, USN) and wife Debbie of St. Mary’s, Georgia; son, Shawn Heisler of Tampa; step-daughter, Dawn Goodwin Barton and husband Steve; step-son, Mike Goodwin of Tampa; grandchildren, Danielle Lascik Andrews of Virginia, Trevor James Lascik of Ely MN, Luke Barton, Sam Barton and Jack Barton, all of Tampa; sisters, Mary Ann Shaffer of Johnstown, OH, Carolyn Saksa of Cadiz, OH; brother, Andy Slaga and wife Melody of West Carrollton City, OH; many nieces and nephews; and Sophia’s, “as close as family friends” Linda Martens and Sandy Koren. A Celebration of Life will be held In Harrisville, OH on March 23rd and a Tampa Family remembrance will be held in Tampa on Feb 26th at 11:00 AM.
