Fighter is not the first word that would come to mind when seeing Sandra "Sandie" Jean Quigley's 5'5" 100-pound frame. However, over the last two (2) years, she fought her autoimmune disease-seizure disorder harder than anyone could ever imagine. Her battle ended in her sleep on January 4, 2022, at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida, dying at the age of Seventy-Two (72).
When doctors expressed amazement at how well she was doing, Sandie always downplayed the issue and refused to let anyone feel sorry for her. She preferred focusing and caring for her loved ones. This should not surprise those who knew Sandie as she had a passion for taking care of people.
On August 31, 1949, Sandie was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Harold and Ruth Quase. Sandie was the middle child between her older sister Linda and her younger brother Gary. Sandie was raised in Maryland, where she met the love of her life, James "Jim" Quigley, at Walter Johnson High School. Sandie graduated from the University of Maryland in 1970 with a degree in interior design.
In 1972, Jim and Sandie married. In the early years of the marriage, Sandie worked to support the family while Jim attended Medical School. After Jim became a Radiologist, Sandie left the workforce to take care of their three (3) sons, Sean, Ryan, and Brett. As the boys grew up, you could not have found a more attentive mother. Every school project was perfect, the pantry and fridge were always fully stocked, gifts were plentiful for every Christmas and birthday. Sandie magically found a way to get all three of her children to three different baseball fields simultaneously. This may have required her station wagon going ninety on back roads, but she would proudly brag she did not receive a ticket until she was in her Sixties.
Sandie has loved dogs since she was a child, and her home was not complete with three (3) boys, so she convinced Jim to add three (3) English bulldogs, Winston, Whitley, and Webster, to the family.
With their sons well on their way to post-graduate degrees, Jim and Sandie decided to start a new adventure. Jim opened his own medical group with Sandie as the administrator. Unfortunately, this endeavor was cut short because Jim passed away due to cancer in 2006.
Sandie spent her remaining years doting over her three sons and eventually her three (3) grandchildren Morgan, Conner, and Ainhoa, having four (4) hour lunches with her best friend Donna McAuley and watching every Tampa Bay Rays game.
While she will be missed, her family takes great comfort knowing that she is finally back in the arms of her beloved Jim, where they can be together forever.
Sandra is survived by her Sister Linda Tesar, brother Gary Quase, her sons Sean Quigley and his wife Megan of Tampa, FL, Ryan Quigley of Tampa, FL and Brett "BJ" Quigley and his wife Angie of Aubrey, TX and her three (3) grandchildren Morgan and Connor Quigley of Tampa, Florida and Ainhoa Quigley of Aubrey TX.
A gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, January 12, 2021, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Blount & Curry Funeral Home MacDill Avenue 605 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33609. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 pm at Blount & Curry Funeral Home MacDill Avenue 605 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33609. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sandie's life.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children Research Hospital. The family would like to thank Dr. Nancy Rodgers Neame and Dr. Eric Harrison for their efforts as they gave us two (2) extra years with Sandie.
