Robert (Bob) Carlyle Worrell, Jr. 86, of Tampa, passed away peacefully Friday, November 1, 2019 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Bob was born to the late Robert Carlyle Worrell Sr. and Marie Lanie Williams Worrell on June 19, 1933 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy M. MacKinnon Worrell. He is survived by his daughter Kay Marie Worrell Cook, son Odell DeLong, daughter Tina DeLong Craig, son Robert C. Worrell III (Robbie) and wife Ginger, son Steve Kinsey and wife Traci, son Gregory S. Worrell, and daughter Michele D. Worrell, his sister Bobbi Drake, brothers George Worrell, Tommy Worrell, and Bill Worrell, and sister Kathy Kirby, as well as many adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many loving extended family members.
Affectionately referred to as “Buddy” by family and friends. The first language he learned was sign language which he and the family used his entire life to express their love for one another. Growing up he attended Sylvan Hills Elementary/Junior High and North Little Rock High School, where he excelled in many different sports. As a young man he played AA baseball and joined the Arkansas National Guard and Navy Reserves in 1949 and enlisted in the Army in 1955, where he served until 1983. During his years of service, he served his country honorably in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He finished his military service as the top recruiter in the state of Florida, where he had settled when he met the love of his life Dorothy MacKinnon, his wife of 46 years. After retiring from the service, (Master Sergeant Worrell) went on to work as a letter carrier for the post office; a job in which he also truly loved because it gave him more opportunity to be around others. He enjoyed talking to everyone he met; all of whom were instantly considered his friend. He touched the lives of many young men while coaching Lutz and TBYFL football teams for his sons as well as through the many years of coaching at Northside Little League baseball. He loved his Tampa Bay Rays and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A perfect day for him would be one surrounded with the love and laughter of friends and family, while the game was on tv.
Visitation for friends and family will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m., with full military service at 5:30 p.m. at Blount & Curry Funeral Home of Carrollwood. Please stay for light refreshments and family sharing after the military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shriners’ Hospital or the Wounded Warriors Project.
