Robert Terry Lyle, passed away on June 19, 2016. Terry was born on April 15, 1924 in Knoxville, TN. He is predeceased by his wife, Marian Cornett Lyle, his parents, Gus Lee and Myrtle Joyce Lyle of Jacksonville, FL, and his sister Mildred Joyce Lyle. Survivors include his daughters Betty Schaefer and husband Gus of St. Petersburg, FL, Becky Castro and husband Nolan of Tampa, FL, Robin Scott of Tampa and Judy Barreto and husband Jack of Coral Springs, FL; grandchildren Matthew Lyle Schaefer, Robert Patrick Schaefer, Caitlin Rebecca Castro, Danielle Maria Scott, Devin Rebecca Barreto and Jared Christopher Barreto; brothers Loyd Smith Lyle and William Lee Lyle and their families of Jacksonville, FL. He moved to Tampa at the age of one, Jacksonville when he was six, Houston, TX when he was eight and at the age of thirteen back to Jacksonville, FL, where he graduated from Landon High School, After a year and a half at the University of Florida, he was called to active duty in the army where he had basic training in the Mule Pack Artillery, went to the University of Oklahoma in the Army Specialized Training Program. Served in Europe in the Combat Engineers and obtained his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry at Officer Candidate School in Fontainebleau, France. After serving a year in the Army of Occupation in an Infantry Cannon Company and the Military Police, he was released from active duty as a First Lieutenant. He returned to the University of Florida where he was a member and president of the Orchestra, Band, Florida Blue Key, Phi Kappa Phi, Vice President of Alpha Psi and President of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma and graduated with a BSBA Degree with high honors. He started his career with H.M. Turnburke, CPA in Clearwater, FL, where he passed the Florida CPA examination with certificate number 37. He moved to Jacksonville, FL and Kansas City, MO with Western Auto Supply Company and returned to Tampa to join Smith and Brailey, which later merged with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company (now known as KPMG) for which he became the first Managing Partner of the Tampa office. Upon retiring from Peat Marwick, he became the first Executive Director of the Florida Council on Economic Education and later the first Director of Internal Audit for the Jack Eckerd Corporation. After retiring from Eckerd, he did executive recruiting as Terry Lyle & Associates. He was a founding member of the University of Florida Fisher School for Accounting Steering Committee and the University of South Florida School for Accounting Advisory Council of which he was chairman. He has served on the alumni boards of the University of Florida and University of Tampa Chapters of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was a member of the Florida and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, President of the Florida West Central Chapter and International Vice President of the National Association of Accountants (now Institute of Management Accountants). In the 1960’s, he served as a member of the Hillsborough County Government Study Commission and the Hillsborough County Charter Commission. He was founding treasurer of the Clearwater Chapter and president of the St. Petersburg chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Singing in America, Inc. and went to International Competition with the Tampa Bay Chapter, Heralds of Harmony, for twelve consecutive years. Terry was also a member of the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, University Club and Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club. He was an active member of Hyde Park Presbyterian Church, serving two terms as an Elder, a Stephen Minister and Chancel Choir member. A gathering of friends and family will be held at Blount & Curry (605 S MacDill Ave. Tampa, FL 33609) on Friday, June 24 from 3 – 4 pm followed by a Celebration of Terry’s Life. Immediately following the Celebration of Life there will be a reception held at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club (1601 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33629).
