Peter received his MD from St. Andrews University in Scotland. He joined the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1980 to direct the new Surgical Intensive Care Unit following a long and distinguished medical career in the United Kingdom. Throughout his tenure at the University of Iowa, he served as professor, physician, leader, interim chairman and Operating Room Physician Director. In recognition of his role as architect of the Hyperbaric Medicine Service at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and due to his selfless dedication to patient care and scholarly contributions to academic medicine, the Peter J.R. Jebson Hyperbaric Medicine Facility at UIHC is named in his honor.
Following retirement, Peter moved to Florida with his wife, June, to whom he was married for 53 years before her passing in 2016. Together they raised three sons, Dr. Peter Jebson (Lakewood Ranch), Hugh Jebson (Tampa), and Leslie Jebson (Columbia, South Carolina). He is survived by his sons and their wives (Sue, Danelle, and Stacy) as well as eight grandchildren (Peter, Jonathan, Alex, Aidan, Sophie, Caelie, Owen, and Elena) and one great-granddaughter (Clarke).
Peter’s greatest love beyond his wife was his family, all of whom feel his loss acutely. He was a veteran of the Royal Army Medical Corps of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Peter devoted his life to the care and comfort of the ill and dying, as well as their families. His medical career was marked by the great compassion he demonstrated for the suffering, as well the deep (and mutual) respect and affection he had for nurses. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nurses Excellence Fund at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
The family has chosen a private celebration of their father’s life. Following cremation and in accordance with his wishes, Peter’s remains will be joined with those of his beloved wife and transported by their three sons to be spread at St. Andrews, Scotland, where they first met and courted.
