89, of Tampa, passed away on Friday night, September 29th, 2017. She was born July 17th, 1928 in Tampa and lived there her entire life. Scottie attended Hillsborough High School and was a cheerleader, played several sports, and was voted “Best All Around Athlete.” She also participated in R.O.T.C. Saberettes, Girls Reserves, Glee Club, flag bearer in the band, and was a reporter for the Red and Black school newspaper. Upon graduation from high school, she attended the University of Tampa, where she was the vice president of the Sigma Theta Phi Sorority, head cheerleader, captain of the varsity volleyball team and basketball team. She was a member of the student senate, the Health and Physical Education Club, the Women’s Athletic Association, and a senior class notable. She was voted Most Athletic as a senior in 1952 and was a member of H.P.E.R.A (Health Physical Education and Recreational Association), that was created to advance the standards of teaching leadership in the field of physical education. She met, and later married, John R. Fabian Sr. “Bobby” at the University of Tampa. Bobby was an accomplished athlete as well and they spent their first years together working for the City of Tampa Recreation Department, at various playgrounds and other recreational facilities in the area. Scottie earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education and her first teaching job was at Madison Junior High School, where she taught PE. From there, she moved to Coleman Junior High School, where she spent the bulk of her teaching career (42 years) teaching English. She loved teaching and was known as a “tough but fair teacher.” In the small South Tampa area, many students can say, “I had Mrs. Fabian as my English teacher.” After retirement, Scottie began a new career as a real estate agent and loved selling real estate. She is survived by her son, John R. (Sherri) Fabian Jr.; two grandchildren, Ashleigh J Fabian and Ryan T. Fabian; and several nieces and nephews. Scottie loved being a teacher and was a very good one. Her greatest love though was her family and she was a terrific wife, mother, and grandmother.
