EGAN, Mary (Dolly) Josephine Wanser, 91, of Tampa, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away July 20, 2024. Mary is survived by her four sons Richard (Sharon), Martin (Liz), James (Heather), Michael (Lisa) and two daughters Mary (Quinn) and Patricia. Fifteen (15) grandchildren, Matthew Egan (Crystal), Kelly Mullikin (Ben), Ashley Egan, Christopher Egan (Lindsay), Catherine Sklaver(Robert), Robert Egan, Thomas (T Bone) Egan, Alexandra Egan, Ryan Egan, Sean Soudrette, Megan Soudrette, Ann Marie Whitehurst, Grace Whitehurst, Abigail Whitehurst and Amanda Egan. Five (5) great grandchildren, Jack Egan, Madelyn Mullikin, Greyson Egan, Sloane Sklaver and River Egan. Mary survived her parents Alonzo (Lon) and Mary, along with sisters Maureen Anderson, Patricia Feeney and Alonzo Wanser Jr.
Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Mary spent her formative youth in Wiscasset, Maine. Coming from a long line of fisherman, Mary’s father Alonzo (Lon), was involved in the bait and tackle industry. Eventually the family relocated to Seaford, Long Island, New York, where the family established and prospered as Lon Wanser Bait and Tackle, Merrick Road.
In 1953 Mary married Martin S. Egan, a police officer for the Nassau County Police Department. Martin joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1959 as a Special Agent and along with Martin, Mary, and the children over the next twenty (20) years moved across the US to various cities (Cleveland, Akron, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Binghamton, NY, Washington, DC) eventually settling in Tampa, Florida. Mary enjoyed cooking (everyone loved the desserts especially the Boston Cream Pie), a good whiskey sour, needle point, reading, Bible study and spending time with her family.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, July 29, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 12708 North Dale Mabry Highway. A celebration of life will immediately follow the funeral at noon at Michael’s Grill, 11720 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, Florida.
Followed by interment at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Catholic Charities in her honor. Mary will be dearly missed.
