Mary Mortellaro Caltagirone, 99, a Tampa native of Sicilian descent, died April 7, 2022 while under Hospice care. She had a large family and circle of friends who admired her many talents and lifetime of service as a devoted mother, educator and a community volunteer. She was preceded in death by her parents Vincenzo and Lucia Mortellaro, her siblings Domenica (Mamie) and Jero Mortellaro, and her son Joseph D. Caltagirone. She is survived by sons Sam A. and Vincent G. Caltagirone (Sue), former daughters-in-law, Norma Tomasello Caltagirone and Carol Bond Caltagirone, nephews Vincent and Douglas Mortellaro (Tracy), cousin George Garcia (Bonnie) and their families. Lovingly called Nana Mary, she will also be missed by her beloved grandchildren, their spouses, great- grandchildren, great-nephews and other extended family.
Mary was proud of her own higher education and that of her sons and grandchildren. She attended local public schools before going away to college in Tallahassee, which was rare for a woman of her background at that time. She graduated in 3 years with a B.S. degree in Spanish and Math in 1943, from Florida College for Women (now FSU). She also held a certificate in Elementary Education from University of Tampa and was a member of 3 honor societies. She taught for 40 years in Hillsborough County public schools at various grade levels. After her retirement in 1983, she enjoyed traveling, attending operas, playing piano, painting, ceramics, sewing, crocheting, quilting, and, especially, baking. Everyone looked forward to her holiday goodies.
Honoring her heritage and Ybor City roots, Mary was a founding member of Lucerna, and later led their offshoot organization, Pan American University Women (PAUW). A four-time past president, she was honored twice as PAUW Woman of the Year. Mary’s other philanthropic and community organizations included the Italian Club and their Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of Italy, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Spanish Lyric Theater, Judeo-Christian Health Clinic, and the Ybor City Museum, where she amassed over 1000 hours of service. In 2005, Mary was presented with the Italian Woman of Excellence Award for Cultural and Civic Involvement; in 2007, she was named Person of the Year for Outstanding Service by St. John’s Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir, led crafts classes, and cooked for fundraisers, among other contributions.
Always loving and kind, Mary was grateful for her full range of life experiences, including her upbringing, her family’s support during her career, her beloved sons and their families, her extended family, many friends, her domestic travels and to Europe, especially Sicily, and her beautiful family home in Tampa.
Plans will be announced soon for a future gathering to take place to celebrate her life. To remember her, please consider making a donation to the Judeo-Christian Health Clinic, 4118 N. MacDill Ave., Tampa, Florida 33607, 813- 870- 0395.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022, 2pm at Centro Asturiano, 1913 N Nebraska Ave, Tampa, FL.
