Les joined the Royal Air Force as an aircraft engineer in 1951, after which he joined a civilian airline in 1956 qualifying as a flight engineer in 1960 and flying globally on early jet airliners. He retired after 33 years with over 16,000 flying hours having worked for BOAC, British Airways and Virgin Airlines.
His job allowed him to take his young family to live in Singapore for several years, then for him to live in Sydney, Australia, where he sailed his boat on the Pitcairn River, and hopped around the South Pacific scuba diving.
Most significantly, whilst flying between Sydney and Los Angeles he met Sharon, his second wife, living first in Chichester, United Kingdom, then Sydney, Australia, finally settling in Riverview FL in 1993. They travelled widely and were devoted to each other for 36 years, until her death in September 2022.
