Larry Nelson Looney, Colonel U.S. Air Force Retired, 76, and a resident of Destin, Fla. passed away in Tampa, Fla. on May 15, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry K. Looney, and Olga Caplinger Looney; his sister Linda J. Looney, and his brother Phillip R. Looney. He is survived by his loving wife, Katsuko Fukuchi Looney of Destin, Fla.; his daughter, Jennifer Looney Johnson of Tampa, Fla.; grandson, Brooks Johnson; granddaughter, Sutton Johnson; and son-in-law, Blaine Johnson. Larry was born on March 28, 1940, in Parkersburg, W.Va. He graduated from Ohio University with a BS in Electrical Engineering and received a MS in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Larry joined the U.S. Air Force in 1963 and had distinguished career of nearly 30 years including combat duty in Vietnam. He received numerous awards and decorations during his military career including a Silver Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross. While stationed at Kadena Air Base, on the Japanese island of Okinawa, he met Katsuko Fukuchi whom he married in 1968. Larry and Katsuko spent 48 wonderful years together and resided in Destin, FL, upon Larry’s retirement from active duty in 1993. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Moffitt Cancer Center in memory of Larry.
