John F. Garvey Jr., 76, passed away peacefully in his home after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, February 26, 2023. John was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to John F. Garvey Sr. and Jeanne Soulier on December 15, 1946. He attended Peters Township High School where he was a multi-sport athlete. After graduation in 1965, he was offered a wrestling scholarship to Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa where he graduated with degrees in Economics and Business in 1969. While at Parsons, he was an active member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity and met his beloved wife of 52 years, Suzanne Held Garvey. The two were married in 1970 and moved to Pittsburgh, where John began his career with the Xerox Corporation. While with Xerox, the family moved throughout the northeast living in Rochester, New York; Baltimore, Maryland and Charleston, West Virginia. In 1983, John left Xerox to open the Centers of Westshore in Tampa, Florida. He owned and operated the executive office suites for over 25 years.
An avid golfer, John and Susie were active members of Carrollwood Village Golf & Country Club for 20 years before moving from Carrollwood Village to Lake Jovita in Dade City in 2002. They moved to Original Carrollwood in 2017 to be close to their family.
During his retirement, John and Susie spent time between their home in Dade City and their home on Lake Santeetlah in the mountains of North Carolina, and later on in Steinhatchee, Florida, where they enjoyed fishing and hosting family and friends.
John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Susie; his daughters Melissa Young (Pete) and Courtney Horner (KC); and his three granddaughters Payton Horner, Avery Horner, and Riley Young. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Swift of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as several nieces and nephews and their children. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him, and remembered for his generosity, larger-than life personality, firm handshake, and well-timed puns.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 26 at Carrollwood Country Club from 2-5pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Moffitt Cancer Center.
