JOHN GATLIN FREEMAN, born September 9, 1940 in Russellville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at home in Lutz, Florida on December 24, 2019. He was a beloved father, brother, grandpa (Papa Ice Cream), uncle and friend. Corporal John Gatlin served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1965 as a surveyor who examined gun and missile sites all over Germany, was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, and qualified as an Expert Marksman.
Afterwards, John moved to Tampa where he began his career in the insurance industry working with Liberty National Life Insurance Company until his retirement. This is where he raised his family. John was so proud of his children Diane, Greg and Chris, and his grandchildren Gregory, Bliss and Slade. He also loved living near his brother, Roy. And, his cherished companion was his dog Maggie who always shared her unconditional love.
John is best known for his sense of humor and he loved to tease. His family holds dear the many memories he created fostering their love of the outdoors – boating, saltwater fishing, lobstering in Key West and their place in Boca Grande, camping in Cayo Costa, and bird hunting. His joy extended to friends he made playing tennis, at the flee market, and his Dunkin Donuts buddies.
Also known as the Million Dollar Man, John was one of the longest living heart transplant survivors in the United States. He was truly one of a kind.
John Gatlin Freeman has left a legacy for all that have loved him. His ashes will be laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
The Freeman family has gained another Angel.
A celebration of life will be held 1:00pm- 5:00pm,Sunday, December 29, 2019 at Bailey's Bluff Clubhouse, 3014 Bluff Boulevard, Holiday, Florida 34691. In Lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Suncoast Animal League, 1030 Pennsylvania Avenue, Palm Harbor, FL 34683 in John's memory.
