Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate.  HSL-36 1981-1984.

I met Dave at HSL-36 Mayport, Florida, but later I went to be with him in Det-2 (Rum Runners). He was the type of guy that took the younger guys under his wing and always showed them the ropes. I always looked up to him as a big brother on the Det. When I first got my Facebook account I looked him up and finally connected with him. I’m so glad that I got to see his wonderful family throughout the years which he loved so much. Ive been thinking all day of the great times we had in cruises but upset that he’s gone. I’m so sorry for the lost of a wonderful and loyal sailor. He will surely be missed. He will stay in my heart forever as a big brother. Love you Dave!

I had the pleasure to serve in the Navy with Dave at HSL-36. We cruised together in 1988 to the Mediterranean. Onboard the USS Vreeland 1068. He was a good friend and shipmate.  Fair winds and following seas shipmate. We have the watch.

Such a wonderful shipmate, my condolences to his family..

I served with Dave at VQ for several years he was a outstanding sailor and good friend. He will be truly missed and heartfelt condolences to his family.

I met Dave in 1989 while serving together at HSL-36 in Mayport, FL. I was an 18-year old undesignated striker who wanted to be an “AT”.  Dave was already a qualified “AT” and maintainer on the H-2 that we worked on. So, I was assigned to accompany him on many days to help and to learn from him. A couple years later, we served together again at VQ-2 in Rota, Spain. He was pretty shocked to arrive and find me there as a qualified “AT” and an aircrewman. It was fun to work alongside of him in the same shop troubleshooting discrepancies once again. One of my favorite memories was a camping trip that we all took from Rota to Arcos. I will always remember Dave with the absolute fondest memories. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I served with Dave at VQ-2 in Rota Spain.  He was just a cool guy!  He will be missed!  Condolences and prayers for his family.

I served with Dave in HSL-36 Mayport, Florida. 
What a great guy he was, always was proud of his girls. We did a lot of cruises together and had lots of fun when we were in different ports, Cuba, Djibouti,  Spain, Bahrain, Spain again, Charleston... and who can forget the wild bus ride from Charleston to Jax. I will never forget how our Det became the "Rum Runners you buy we fly"...Dave painted our sonobuoy cover by hand...he was very proud of that ( George, Dave, Roscoe and myself had a great trip to the Bahamas and was able to see the XO over that trip).
We had many great times with many friends throughout our tour, Dave was always a great friend to all he met. He was always ready to help you with anything. The Coolest Dude too!!
You will be missed by so many people R.I.P. Dave.

I was privileged enough to serve with Dave at VQ2 in Rota Spain as his squadron corpsman. There are so many wonderful things I could say about Dave. He was such a gentleman. He was funny, smart, and quick witted just to name some of his qualities. I enjoyed our chats about politics and in general America. We were all heartbroken to hear of his passing and all shed a few tears. He will be so greatly missed by his friends and always remembered and honored by those of us who were lucky enough to have him as a friend and squadron mate. Fair winds and following seas my beautiful friend. 

I served with Dave in Spain.  My first deployment as a technician was with him as my senior technician... He taught and showed me a lot that made me a better technician.  We had a lot of talks, laughs, and he gave me some down-to-earth advice over few beers... 

Still remember him always wearing a helicopter O-ring as a bracelet... Now I regret not getting with him for a beer when I was in Tampa for my father's funeral.

There are so many great memories of Dave. He was a shipmate and close friend. Life was always an adventure when you were around. Dave and Lisa were a big part of our life while in Spain. We hadn't been able to see each other much state side but hooked up for a fun visit while in Florida years ago. Love you and your wonderful girls, you will be missed. 

My condolences to McGuire family. I served with Dave over in Spain in the early 90s and had nothing but great experiences with him on deployment and as his next door neighbor. I have many good memories I'll carry  with me.

You were a true family man with core values of God, Family, and Country.
Always willing to lend a hand.  Never the thought of “what’s in it for me” mentality.

Years back we had a unique and complex project our construction company was performing on a waterfront pier.  The conditions were challenging for our crew and we were limited each day by the tide variations in order to gain access under the walkway in order to perform repairs safely.  In search for a fix and knowing Dave had a boat appropriate to help us for this situation I called upon him.  Without hesitation, he trailered it up and came to our aid not once but twice over 2 consecutive days.  He stayed with us and helped our crew along.   Always leaving saying “whatever you need”… “no problem just give me a call.”
Always good talking with you about hunting, fishing and music. 
Rest In Peace my friend.  Till we meet again.

Uncle Dave

So many memories are in my head right now. My first beer ( a Molson lol), throwing me over your head in the river, talking about life, laughing about life, crying about life, fishing, boating, music, just being family. So many memories I will always keep dear and try share even more often than I do now.

One memory I have that will always be one of the coolest days in my life was when I was I guess 11 or 12 years old. I was visiting with yall in Jacksonville and you threw me in an Navy uniform and brought me to work with you. We greased down helicopter roters, walked the flight line, ate lunch at the end of a runway and watched fighter jets take off and land. On the way out you brought me into a briefing room with a bunch of fighter pilots and afterward ran into a buddy you went to sea with in past tours. Somehow you got me into the cockpit of a fighter jet. I am not sure who was more excited, you or me! We really had some great times. Man did we laugh. You always went the extra mile with our relationship. I miss you terribly and will have so much to talk to you about when we meet again.

My mom already shared part of this but I figured why not add a little bit more detail. This trip was one of the biggest of the year. It was a huge event for the second grade Boy Scouts. When uncle Dave agreed to go with me I was so excited. When we got there uncle Dave  managed to put an entire tent together set up beds, make an area for a fire, and set up walkie-talkies in what felt like 10 minutes. About the second day me and a group of my friends went off into the woods for an “adventure,” however not to anyone’s surprise we soon found ourselves lost. For a bunch of 2nd graders being lost in what we assumed was the middle of the woods was quite terrifying. The others phoned in to their parents who just started beeping car horns and such, but when I called uncle Dave he quickly told me to walk just to the left of the direction of the sun. He stayed on the radio the whole journey back somehow telling us exactly how to walk straight back to camp without being anywhere near us. All the parents who had continued beeping car horns were so  were quick to believe that they were the ones who had led us back, but little did they know it was Uncle Dave about another half mile away getting the grill ready for dinner. To this day all of the friends who were out in the woods remember uncle Dave as the wilderness expert who led us back to camp while everyone else’s parents were beeping car horns and yelling into the woods. 

David you were loved and will always be remembered may God bless your passing and your future on your way home! 

Dave was always ready to help out and lend a hand. When asked if he could help out with something he never stopped to think he just said yes. When my son was in 2nd grade he had just switched to a new school and joined the Boy Scouts. He was so excited about going on the camping trip but my husband had to be away on a trip for work and was not going to be able to attend. We asked “Uncle Dave” if he would take him, and of course his answer was yes. I will always remember how excited all of the boys were to meet Pierce’s Uncle Dave who showed up with a car loaded down with everything  from fire starters to a canoe strapped to the roof! The kids talked about it for years! He was a kind-hearted man with a zest for life and rebellion. He will always be loved and remembered ❤️
