Irene Hinkle, AKA “Nanny” was called home on June 13, 2024. The loves of her life were her 3 daughters, 9 Grandchildren, and 14 Great Grandchildren; Family was her greatest joy.
She was born in Glasgow, Scotland as the only child of Hugh and Margaret Brown. She had fond memories of her childhood, walking along the bank of the Clyde where her mum and dad managed a pub before moving to Hemel Hempstead, England. After completing her schooling, she enjoyed spending time with her friends, attending the weekly social club dances, “she loved to dance”. She married and had 2 of her girls in Hemel before immigrating to America, settling in Connecticut where she welcomed her 3rd daughter. She then moved her family to Lake Park, Florida where she raised her daughters. She then made her final move to Tampa, FL in 2007, living a quiet single peaceful life.
She was active in the Church of England (Presbyterian) in her early years. Mom then became involved on a company softball league and enjoyed bowling on leagues for years. She was very involved with our activities; Girl Scout Cookie Chairman (she didn’t realize what she was in for until the semi pulled up to the house), coaching girls softball league, making cheerleading outfits, attending swim meets, horseback riding and attending barrel racing events, doing ceramics, and playing bingo.
She started her work life at Eastman Kodak as a switchboard operator in England. She worked for Solitron, working her way up to Quality Control Lead. She ran a business in Cherokee, NC on the reservation during the Summers. She went on to become a highly skilled Phlebotomist, working at St. Mary’s Hospital, Palm Beach Blood Bank, Smith Klein Beecham, and Quest Laboratories before going into retirement in 2007.
She faced many challenges throughout her life that she faced with fierce determination and strength (she passed this on to her girls). Mom was strong, stubborn, determined, extremely funny, and always had a kind word. She was kind and generous with her love for family and friends.
A special thank you to her friend Lyn for always being there for her. You started as a neighbor and became her closest friend and part of the family.
Mom was the glue, the anchor, and the light of our family. Gone too soon and will never be forgotten. She’s still here with us in our hearts forever. The world will change but the love and memories will never fade away. “There are some who bring light so great to the world that even after they have gone, their light remains.”
Her love will sustain us until we are together again.
We love you Mom
