Hazel Gray Hanlon, 86, died peacefully on November 1, 2021 in Tampa, Florida. Born in Jacksonville, Hazel grew up in Tampa, where she lived most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Hazel Gray; husband, David Hanlon; and grandson, William Humphries. Hazel is survived by sons David (Marion), Tom (Gina), William (Holly) and Charles (Carrie); daughter Jane Humphries (Walker); sister Jane Simpson (Nathan) and grandchildren Turner and Taylor Humphries; Jackie and Haley Hanlon; Gray and Weston Hanlon and Finn Hanlon. She is also survived by Howard Gill, with whom she enjoyed the last eight years in Virginia Beach.
Hazel went to high school at St. Mary’s boarding school in Raleigh, N.C. and then to Hollins College. She returned to Tampa where she and David married and started their family. In addition to raising five children, Hazel started her own business as an antique dealer and interior designer. Her long and successful career was more than just a business. She had natural talent and contagious enthusiasm, and many clients became cherished lifelong friends. Many still own and treasure pieces they bought from her because of the quality of those pieces and what Hazel meant to them.
A service to remember and celebrate Hazel will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7th at Blount Curry Funeral Home, 605 S MacDill Ave. The family will receive friends there beginning at 2 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to any of the following: Meals on Wheels of Tampa, LifePath Hospice or the Humane Society of the United States.
