He was born on March 3, 1930 to Esteban and Winona DelValle Cabrera. He was preceded in death by his parents, and seven siblings. His son Gil Cabrera, predeceased him in 2016. Having just celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary, June 19th, he is survived by the love of his life, Aleida Cabrera, who married him right after middle school at age 16. He is also survived by his sister, Jasmine Cabrera, son Troy Cabrera (Gabriel Gonzales), grandsons Desmond (Chase), Dustin and Devon Cabrera, his great grandson Micah Cabrera, daughter in law Donette Cabrera, as well as many other extended family and friends.
Gilbert served in the U.S. Marines and was a Korean War Veteran. He retired from American Can Company and later retired from the Hillsborough County School System. He was a member of the American Legion Post 138 and the La Nuova Sicilia Unita Lodge. In younger years he was a scuba diver, champion spear fisherman and an avid bicycle rider and enjoyed many sports. He coached volleyball at Plant High School and was a strict referee/umpire. In later years he most enjoyed cruises and singing Karaoke with his beautiful "Lady" right up until his last week.
A visitation for Gilbert will be held Monday, July 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Blount & Curry Funeral Home at Garden of Memories, 4207 East Lake Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33610. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 11:00 AM at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 4207 East Lake Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33610.
