George Edward Fernandez, 76, passed away on March 24, 2016 in Tampa, FL. George was born and raised in Tampa. He graduated from Jesuit High School and the University of Tampa and he had a life-long love of the local sports teams. George served both active duty and in the US Coast Guard reserves. George retired from the US Department of Labor as District Director after many years of service. His passions in life were cooking, traveling (in particularly cruising all around the world), and spending time with his family. George will be remembered for his dry wit and for the fact that he never met a stranger. George was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Pura Fernandez and son Kevin Edward Fernandez. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Vilma Fernandez; son Brian Fernandez (Mari); grandchildren Kristina Brock (Ricky), Jennifer Kerr-Fernandez; and Nicholas Fernandez; brothers Oscar Fernandez (Diana) and Richard Fernandez (Carol) as well as several nieces. The family would like to extend a special thanks to LifePath Hospice Pink Team for the care they provided. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 11AM at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church with the family receiving friends one hour prior. Interment to follow at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, The American Cancer Society or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
