Donald Scott Thornton, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully on July 25, 2024. Born on August 23, 1953, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Homer and Mary Thornton, Scott’s journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and love for those around him.
Scott’s childhood was shaped by his father’s military career, which led the family to settle in Tampa, Florida, where he grew up and built lifelong friendships. He also spent time in Alaska and North Florida. Scott graduated from Robinson High School in 1971.
Shortly after graduation, Scott answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Marine Corps. His time in the Marines instilled in him the values of discipline, honor, and loyalty, which he carried with him throughout his life. After his military service, Scott began his professional career at Kinney’s Shoe Store, quickly becoming the top salesperson.
Scott relocated his family to Arcadia, Florida, where he embarked on a distinguished career as a Deputy Sheriff. In this role, he became a community pillar, known for his unwavering commitment to justice and deep sense of duty. Scott earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the residents he served, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
After a long and fulfilling career in law enforcement, Scott transitioned to a new chapter at Home Depot. He brought the same dedication and expertise to his work, becoming a trusted and knowledgeable team member. His colleagues and customers alike valued his insight and reliability. After 20 years of service, Scott finally hung up his tool belt, closing the chapter on a life of hard work, integrity, and service to others.
Scott loved exploring the natural beauty of Florida, especially through fishing trips. At home, he was an avid movie enthusiast. The holidays were his favorite time of year, as they brought his family together.
Those who knew Scott would remember his infectious humor and the deep care he showed to everyone around him. He had a unique ability to bring light and laughter into any room, and his presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mary Thornton, whom he dearly loved.
He is survived by his son, Sean Thornton, his wife, Iris Carde, and his grandchildren, Tristan and Evan. Scott also leaves behind his daughter, Jennifer Robbins (née Thornton), and her children, Derrick, Junior, and Zion. His legacy continues through his brother, Greg Thornton, and wife, Jeanette, along with their sons and families, Chris and Jason. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Thornton-Iannone, and her son, Eric.
Scott’s life was a testament to the values of family, service, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy will continue through the stories and memories shared by his family and friends.
