Don was born in Tampa, Florida to Evelyn Stevens and Douglas Atwood on October 20, 1949. He attended Hillsborough High School and married Susan Elaine Ferlita on December 2, 1969 in Folkston, Georgia. Don was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal. He worked as an insurance sales representative at Atwood Insurance for 15 years. Don was one of the founders of Temple Terrace Pony League Baseball.
Don is preceded in death by Douglas P. Atwood, Evelyn Atwood, Gordon Stevens (uncle), Bobby Hinchee (brother).
Don is survived by Mary Nicholson, longtime girlfriend of 19 years; Susan Elaine Atwood, former wife of 30 years; Donna Richburg, daughter (Earl); Ryan Atwood, son (Jennifer); Douglyn Davis, sister; Douglas Atwood; brother; Ashlen Nawlin, granddaughter; Brittanie Crum, granddaughter; Devin Crum, grandson; Ryan Laine Atwood, granddaughter; Brandon Nawlin, great-grandson; Peyton Nawlin, great-granddaughter; Hudson Nawlin, great-grandson. Loved like family: Emily Glennon (Matt), Christine Nicholson, Harlow Brooks, Briela Glennon and Brady Glennon.
Burial service will take place at 11:00 AM Monday, January 13, 2020 at the Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell 33513. A Celebration of Life will be hosted later the same day at Maggiano’s at 5:00 PM, 203 Westshore Plaza, Tampa 33609.
Arrangements are by Blount and Curry Carrollwood. Family requests donations to American Cancer Society in memory of Donald Atwood in lieu of flowers.
