Alvaro Restrepo

He was born in Bello, Antioquia, Colombia to the late Gabriel Restrepo Botero and Julia Sanchez.

Alvaro was a Medical Doctor with specialization in Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. From1960-1970 he worked as a Medical Doctor, both as neurosurgeon and psychiatrist at the La Paz Clinic in Bogotá, Colombia. In the early 1970s he moved to Cincinnati, OH where he started working at the Rollman Psychiatric Hospital. At the end of the 1970s he became Clinical Director at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health, where he worked for 12 years, while also conducting his own private practice and working at the VA hospital and Charter Hospital. He entered the US Army Reserve in 1988 and in 1991 he entered active duty during Operation Desert Storm in Ft. Rocker, Alabama, where he performed as an emergency doctor. He then continued in active duty during Operation Iraqi freedom, when he became Medial Director of Drug and Alcohol from 1991 to 1994 at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. From 1994 to 1997 he was stationed in Ft. Bliss at El Paso Texas, where he worked as a psychiatrist at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center and then from 1997 to 2000 he served as Commander of the 7222 Medical Support Unit (MSU) in Tampa, Fl. In 2001 he was transferred to the Retired Reserve, eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army. In 1998 he started at Peace River Center in Bartow Florida, where he worked as a psychiatrist until December 2020.

Alvaro was a member of both the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Camacho.

Alvaro is survived by his brother, Ricardo Restrepo of Bogotá Colombia; sister Luz Restrepo of Bogotá Colombia; spouse Gladys León Restrepo of Tampa, FL; son Alvaro Andres Restrepo of Tampa, FL; daughter Cynthia Monique Restrepo of New York City; stepdaughter Marcela Vásquez-León of Tucson, AZ; stepdaughter Ana Maria Vásquez-León of St. Petersburg, FL; and grancdhilren Mia Gloria Restrepo of Tampa, FL, Liliana Clare Restrepo of Tampa, FL, Mario Aubert-Vásquez ofTucson, AZ, Diego Aubert-Vásquez of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Pablo Francisco Restrepo Vásquez of Gainesville, FL and Maya Luna Boren Vásquez of St. Petersburg, FL.

A visitation will take placed on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 from 10:30AM to 11:30AM at Gonzalez Funeral Home with funeral services beginning at the funeral home at 11:30AM. Interment will full military honors will then follow at 2:00PM at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, capacity will be limited at both the funeral home and cemetery. For those that can not attend in person, the funeral services will be streamed beginning at 11:30AM on the Gonzalez Funeral Home Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/GonzalezFuneral)
