Shermone touched so many people's lives, because that's what people like Shermone do... They are light, they are pure love. 

I have a lot of little moments I think about when I think about her. They are all these little, beautiful moments that make up life. I can't pin them all down... All I really know is that I had some really tough times when we worked together. Most days, I was barely hanging in there (and that's an understatement.) She was not just someone I could commiserate with. She was there to just listen. Really listen. With her whole heart. 

One day, she told me a story about when she worked as a reporter. How she had this moment where she decided she just couldn't do it anymore, because there was no heart or human-ness to it. I don't know if she shared this on purpose, but I'd like to think she did. And with that story, she taught me one of the most important lessons a person can teach another person: You can walk away. You have choices. You're not chained. There are other paths. Other horizons. Other places.

When I told her I was headed to another job, she was so happy for me. Other people weren't genuinely happen. But, god... She was. She told me she was proud of me. No one else told me they were proud of me when they heard the news.

I didn't want to write this at all. But, there are so many people sharing their stories and photos of Shermone - and weaving this beautiful tapestry of who she was and how she touched people's lives in small and very big ways. As much as it's heavy and hurts, these words are important. Because they carry love. And right now, she's not here, but the love she gave us and that we have for her is forever. Because that's the thing about love for good people. It doesn't go anywhere. It will never go anywhere.

We will keep you in our heart forever. 

How do I write an “in memory of my friend”?  

I laughed so hard with my friend until I cried; I cried so much with my friend until she made me laugh.  There are no words that I can put in writing that could express my true feelings except- I love you so much!

Shermone was so much fun to work with, her smile and laughter brought joy to my heart when we were in meetings. She was such a hard worker, and it was a pleasure to work on projects with her because she was always very encouraging, bringing energy and finding  positive creative solutions to improve programs and services to our students.  My heart is heavy for this loss, and for her family,  but I know the angels are celebrating gaining such a kind and beautiful soul. 

Our sweet Shermone! I feel so fortunate to have known you. Thinking of you makes me smile, you had such a beautiful aura and positive spirit. Just the other day, we shared a brief talk, and I felt your genuine care and kindness. You left me with strength, gratitude and wisdom to carry on with the work we do. I thank you for sharing a smile on a bad day, for your honesty and friendship.    
You've inspired many, and served so many more. Rest sweet friend. 


Working with Shermone was a pleasure.  She was always very professional and understanding.  I remember the last time I saw her at a meeting and she gave me such a pleasant and warm smile as she asked me about my family.  Her passing is such a great loss to us, but I take comfort in knowing how faithfully she served the Lord.  I know she is safely in His presence.  My thoughts and prayers are with her family.    

Shermone was the first person I ever met at Broward College. She was the Chairperson of the hiring committee that hired me in my first position at Broward College.  When I started at the college over 10 years ago, I did not know my relationship with Shermone would grow not only into a colleague I would hold the highest respect for, but also a Woman of God who became one of my closest friends. Everytime we would interact with each other, we always ministered to each other about our personal & professional growth, our belief in God, shared stories about our children (she loved Summer with all of her heart and was so proud of the young lady she is growing to be), and of course we had plenty of laughs between each other. The two memories that stand out to me about Shermone, was first, she knew I was a NY Jets fan and one year they were making a run in the playoffs, and she invited me to attend church with her. I went to church for two straight weeks and the Jets won, the third week I could not go, the Jets lost that week. I told her I jinxed my team, of course Shermone said I was silly for believing in a superstitious ritual and not believing in God. I told her sister, of course I believe in God, but I truly did jinx the Jets that day. We had a good laugh behind that one. The next memory was when my son passed away, she was very encouraging to me and was one of the many people who spoke God's word to me that God was still present in the midst of the heaviness upon my heart. Shermone, I believe that God is present right now in the midst of my heart's heaviness recognizing the loss of my good friend and sister. Rest in eternal peace my friend, I still believe in sports jinxes but know that I truly believe in God and I know God welcomed you into paradise on September 13th and said "job well done", you praised his name, loved your daughter, ministered to all of us, and now here's your reward in paradise. Shermone truly was an extraordinary woman!!! She has touched many lives with her beautiful soul and I am honored to have known her and worked with her.

Though I did not know Shermone that well, or for that long of a time, every time we met she greeted me with a smile, a  hug and a kiss. How much that means while at work....how rare that is...is hard to describe.  She made me feel safe and valued and loved.  That was a gift to me, that cost her nothing but meant everything. I only hope in some small way I made her feel the same.  I will do all I can to pass on Shermone's glow and kindness in this oftentimes dark world.  She is most certainly with the angels! now.

It seems hard to summarize have I feel about Shermone in such few words because for those of you that know her, you know she was amazing.  I first met Shermone in 2014...she was the person that interviewed me and hired me.  Little did I know that throughout the time I worked with her she would turn out to be such an amazing person. But who am I kidding, I knew that from the first day we talked.  She was always supportive, loving, encouraging and shared her life experiences with me and always comforted me.  I always thought, wow, her daughter is so lucky to have such an awesome mom.  She always spoke of Summer like she was the light of her life, which I know she was.  She always asked me about my son and always wanted to make sure we were good.  I am sad that we will no longer have those moments to share but I know that you will forever live in our hearts.  I was blessed to have met you Shermone.

To Shermone's Family, 
Words can't describe how dynamic and wonderful Shermone was. I truly admired her devotion to God and the life she lived, always giving God the glory. She and I were birthday twins.. Yes, 12-26-1970. We joked about how hard it was to compete with Jesus for attention on our birthdays. We were also "southern women" of grace and humility.
