Lloyd Emanuel Afflick, an extraordinary historian and teacher, deeply adored husband, father, grand-father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, died Saturday, August 22, 2020 in the Florida Medical Center with his three girls, Sherna, Nneka and Shari at his side after suffering a stroke. He was 83.
He is the 4th of six children of Joseph and Miriam Afflick. He was born and raised in Portland, Jamaica. His career as an educator started at the Skibo All Age school. He studied at the foot of Mr. Wellington who had a lasting impression on him. He obtained his teacher’s diploma from the Mico Teacher’s College. His first post was at the St Georges high school where he taught English to the deaf. He studied at the University of the West Indies, obtaining a degree in History and Social Studies. Upon graduation he went to teach in the Bahamas where he taught at primary, middle schools. He lectured at the San Salvador Teacher’s College in San Salvador, Bahamas and part-time at the College of the Bahamas in Nassau.
It was during his last year at the University of the West Indies that he met and married his wife, Sherna and she accompanied him to the Bahamas where their two daughters, Nneka and Shari were born. They later migrated to the US where he continued his work in education as a Resource Teacher in the Multicultural Department of the Broward County School System. During this time, he obtained a master’s degree in Teaching from Florida Atlantic University. While a student there he was a Guest Lecturer on African American History. He continued working with the Broward County School System until he retired.
He continued his research in retirement and published two books, A Teen-Agers Guide to Success and A Reason to Smile. His love of teaching, even in retirement, led him to participate in the annual Black History month celebration at the Ascension Peace Presbyterian Church under Rev. Raymond Anglin and later Rev. Wylie Hughes.
He has gone on to join his mother, Miriam; father, Joseph; sister Joyce and brothers Vernon and Sydney. Among those in whose memories he will live on forever are his wife, Sherna; daughters Nneka and Shari; grand-children D’Andre and Diara; son-in-law, Dion; sister, May; brother, Allan; nephews, nieces, cousins and numerous relatives and friends.
