Bill, a long time resident of Tallahassee was born March 6, 1922 in Chattanooga Tennessee to William Lee and Maggie Shirley McCluskey and grew up in Chickamauga Georgia. He served in the US Army Air Corps (which later became the US Air Force) in the China, Burma, and India Theater in World War II and later in the Korean Conflict. He was a partner with Albritton-Williams Construction Company and retired from the company in 1977. He married the former Edith M. “Toto” Coombs Christmas Eve 1947 at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Apalachicola Florida.
He is survived by his wife, two children, Claire S. McCluskey of Savannah Georgia and William T. “Bill” McCluskey Junior of Tallahassee, four grandchildren, William and Benjamin English and Kendall and Tara McCluskey, a sister, Sylvia McCluskey Betts (Frank), brothers Waverly J. McCluskey (Lanova) and Leroy S. McCluskey( Mary, deceased), three nieces and a nephew. He is also survived by his sister-in law Marianne C. Cunningham, a niece and three nephews and brother-in-law James P. Coombs.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being with friends and family. He was known for his great sense of humor and enjoyed reminiscing about his many outings along the Wacissa and Apalachicola Rivers. He leaves behind his dear, dear friends and fellow members of T.O.F. who shared his love of the outdoors, outdoor cooking, and dining at The Pole Barn.
He was a passionate gardener and volunteered with the St. John’s Episcopal Church “Diggers” who maintain the gardens and grounds of the Church.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 271 N. Monroe St., Tallahassee with a reception following in the Library. Burial will be at 3:00 PM at The Magnolia Cemetery, Apalachicola.
Memorial donations can be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Big Bend Hospice, or The American Cancer Society.
