Lt Col William S. Humbert III, USMC

William S. Humbert III, Lt. Col. USMC Retired (79) Entered into rest on Thursday, April 18, 2013. His passing coincides with his mother, Aldena Humbert’s birthday. William was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 20, 1933 to Bill and Aldena Humbert, and at the age of 3, moved to Newport News, Virginia, where he spent his life. Bill attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia. He graduated in 1955 and entered into the flight program, beginning his career with the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours of Vietnam, tours in Japan and Europe. While in Vietnam, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying rescue missions. When he returned to the states, he was on the faculty at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. He retired from his career with the Marine Corps in 1977, serving honorably for 22 years. He then came to Florida, graduated from Florida State University with his Masters in Public Administration. He then spent 24 years with the Florida Legislature working for the Auditor General’s office in OPPAGA. After retiring from the Legislature, he spent his days soaring the skies with his pilot friends, stargazing, playing golf, and enjoying life. He was a member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, Sons of the American Revolution(Roanoke, VA, Fincastle Group), SAE Fraternity, Quiet Birdmen, AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), and a devoted member of Killearn United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Florida. He is preceded in death by his mother, Aldena and father, William S. Humbert II; daughter, Kim Pantle, and grand-daughter, Christi Nowak. He is survived by his loving wife, ”Lotus Blossom” of 41 years, Patt A. Humbert, his children: Terry Lee Trent; D.D. Flynn(Ron); Claire Donovan(Kirk);Mary Aldena Blalock (Don);Theresa Lynn Bobbitt (Eddie); Bill R. Humbert(Jenny); Thomas R. Humbert; His eight grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and his cousin, Ralph Holsinger (Sallie). Bill was devoted to his family, church and many friends. He will be deeply missed. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Culley’s MeadowWood, Timberlane Road Chapel, on Saturday, April 20th from 6-8pm. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Killearn United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 21st at 3:30pm. A reception will be held in the Asbury Hall following the celebration.
