He was born in Jackson, Tennessee on April 16, 1923, to Nathaniel and Olive Futrell. He grew up working on a farm and working in the General Motors Truck and Coach Factory until April 1942 when he enlisted in the Marine Corp. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Division and participated in the campaign for the Solomon Island, specifically Guadalcanal. He received the Asian – Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and a Presidential Unit Citation for his service.
Upon discharge, he returned to Jackson and worked at the power company for several years. Moving to various jobs, he finally settled in San Diego, California, where he remained. He met and married Clarissa. Clarissa predeceased him in 1992.
Tom is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn Christine “Christi” and Charlie Tyahur, grandson Christopher Baras, great-grandsons Carson and Tanner, grandson Shaun, and great-granddaughter Natalie.
A Funeral Service will be held for both Tom and his wife, Clarissa at the Tallahassee National Cemetery on Friday, October 23 at 12:00 PM.
