

Russell Leroy Chaney passed away Thursday, August 28 at Dozier House of Big Bend Hospice following a lengthy illness. Russell was born June 9, 1934 in Washington, DC to Russell Chaney and Elsie (Zust) Chaney. Following an enlistment in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, he moved to New York and enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and later appeared in several Broadway and off-Broadway plays. He was a member of Actor’s Equity and a life member of Theatre Tallahassee.
He married the love of his life, Mabel Zimmerman, in 1962 and they moved to Tallahassee in the mid-70’s. Both Russell and Mabel were devoted volunteers at the public radio and television stations for many years. Russell was a well-known arts critic and promoted movies, theater, and art shows on local radio.
Russell is predeceased by his parents and his wife Mabel. Survivors include several cousins, nieces and nephews in the mid-Atlantic and New Jersey areas.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, September 8 at 10:30 am at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road. Donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
