Robert Jay Kugler was born on August 8, 1945 in Washington DC at the Columbia Hospital for women, along with his identical twin, Standish Parker. Bob’s sister, Nancy was 11 years old at this time and loved to be with the twins. Bob lived in Arlington, Virginia until his teenage years, then Falls Church, Virginia where he graduated from George C Marshall High School. In Bob’s junior year of high school he joined the Washington DC National Guard. Bob was very interested in guns and became a small arms repairman.
From 1965-67 he worked for the Army Map Service, Corp of Engineers, in the field of photogrammetry and cartography. From 1967-69 he worked for Fairfax County Government in the Division of Streets and Drainage Review as a Senior Engineering Aide. In 1969 he worked for the engineering firm of Dewberry, Nealon and Davis as an engineering designer and then in photogrammetry.
In the summer of 1968 Bob met his future wife, Pamela Jean Dixon, who also worked at Fairfax County Government. On September 13, 1969 Bob and Pam were married at St. Andrews Air Force Base.
In 1970 Bob was offered a position in the engineering firm, “Barrett, Daffin and Colony” in Tallahassee, Florida. During this time Bob and Pam bought their first house near Lake Jackson.
On November 1, 1975 the couple was blessed with a baby girl, Deborah Jean.
Then on October 2, 1977, the couple was again blessed with a baby girl, Christine Marie “Kristy.”
In 1978 Bob, Pam and the girls moved to Leesburg, Virginia to be with Bob’s father, who was diagnosed with cancerous melanoma. At that time Bob worked for the Fairfax County Water Authority as a dispatcher for eight years while spending quality time with his father, mother, brother and family.
Throughout his life Bob worked for several engineering firms, concluding his career at Jim Stidham and Associates.
As time marched on both girls were married and Bob and Pam became the proud grandparents of five grandchildren; Joseph Wylie Herzog, Andrew Thomas Herzog, Jacob Paul Herzog, Elizabeth Marie Herzog and Simon Robert Frederick Diehl.
Bob had many hobbies, and was a true outdoorsman which led to a relationship with God. He loved to hunt, canoe, fish, and camp. He also like vegetable gardening.
At the age of 14, Bob became interested in fly fishing. That interest generated his hobby of creating flies for catching bass and other fish in Virginia and West Virginia. This hobby stayed with Bob all his life and he has quite a collection of flies. At the age of 16 Bob built from scratch a flint lock Kentucky Long Rifle.
Another one of Bob’s hobbies was riding motorcycles that he would only ride on the roads in the country around the family cabin in Shannandale, West Virginia.
Bob also had a love of horses from his high school years. He owned Bonnie, a beautiful quarter horse and went on many trail rides with her in Virginia. One of his favorite quotes from Winston Churchill, was “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."
Bob is survived by his wife Pamela; daughter, Deborah Diehl (Jamie), grandson, Simon Diehl; daughter, Christine “Kristy” Herzog, grandsons, Joseph, Andrew, Jacob and granddaughter, Elizabeth Herzog. His identical twin brother, Standish Parker Kugler (Janet), niece, Melissa Stahl (John) and children; niece, Karrie Souza (William) and children; DeDe Mori (Mike) and children.
There will be a funeral service on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM at East Hill Baptist Church, 912 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32308 with a visitation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Big Bend Hospice, or to East Hill Baptist Church in the name of Robert J. Kugler.
