He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marjorie Blackshaw Hoffmann, Tallahassee, as well as his six children: David (Emily), Miami, FL; Michael (Barbara), Melbourne, FL; Anne Falcon (Gary), Union, KY; Catherine Cannon, Jacksonville, FL; Nancy Glisson (Doug), Tallahassee; and Eric (Marcia), Tallahassee. He was grandpa to 12 grandchildren, and great-grandpa to 10.
Robert, known as “Bob,” was born June 25, 1927 in Cincinnati, OH, the youngest of five children of Aloysius and Eva Dornstauder Hoffmann. At the age of 18, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in Guam during the latter days of World War II. After the war, he lived in Miami, FL, where he met Marjorie and in 1951, they married. The newlyweds soon moved to Dayton, Ohio, where Bob graduated from University of Dayton (UD); their first son David was born in Dayton.
Upon graduating UD, they returned to Miami where they remained for the next 34 years growing and loving a family of six children. Bob taught in Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 30 years at both the elementary and high school level. During those years, he earned his Master of Science degree in educational media from the University of Miami. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves with tours of duty as an instructor in Panama, the Pentagon, Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Leavenworth, KS. He attained the rank of Colonel. Dad also actively served at St. Catherine-Siena Catholic Church.
Upon retiring Bob and Marge moved to Tallahassee where they had a house built and welcomed visits from friends and family. They enjoyed camping with friends and also took many trips over the years to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, as well as areas of the United States.
Bob was a friendly man, one who never met a stranger. He had a natural curiosity about how things worked and could repair anything. Above all, Bob – who was son, brother, husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa - loved his family dearly, showing it in countless ways. He will be greatly missed.
Interment will be May 6, 2022 at 2pm at Tallahassee National Cemetery.
