Rex Wright, 93, of Tallahassee, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013.
He was born in Malvern, AL, December 9, 1919, the son of the late Alpheus and Bertha Wright. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betty Wright; and a son, Bill Wright.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Wright Hyson of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Kimberly Wright Bylock of Joaquin, TX, Katy Hyson Owens of Lincolnton, NC and Brian Hyson of Charlotte, NC; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He served as a Lieutenant, junior grade, in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II as the captain of a LSM and a LCT mainly in the South Pacific. After his naval service, he attended Troy State for his undergraduate degree and the University of Alabama for his master’s degree. He began his career in education as a teacher, coach and principal in Laurel Hill, Crestview and Bell, Florida. He came to Tallahassee in the late 1950s to work for the State Department of Education, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Capital City Kiwanis Club for many years, serving a term as president. He was an active member of East Hill Baptist Church for over 50 years.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Friday, May 17th at Culley’s MeadowWood on Riggins Road. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Saturday, May 18th at East Hill Baptist Church Chapel with burial at MeadowWood Memorial Park.
