After attending White Deer High School, at which she was valedictorian, she attended St. Anthony School of Nursing in Amarillo, TX, graduating in 1942. This was just in time to be commissioned as lieutenant in the Women’s Army Nurse Corp in which she served during WWII, caring for US servicemen for 3 ½ years. During the war she met and married Air Force pilot, H. C. Hawkins, Jr.; they were happily married for 58 years.
After the war they moved to Perry, FL and then to Tallahassee in 1947. She worked at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, then FSU Thagard Student Health Center for 37 years. While there, she continued her education and became one of Florida’s first nurse practitioners (ARNP).
Regina was a long term parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She loved to read, garden and various arts and crafts.
Regina was predeceased by her husband, H. C. Hawkins, Jr.; two sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by her son and only child, Col. (ret.) H. C. “Tex” Hawkins, III (Glenda); two grandchildren, Lt. Col. Christopher S. Hawkins (Angie) and Heather Heierman (Jason); and three great-grandchildren, Bailey Heierman, Morgan and Nolen Hawkins.
Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home is assisting the Hawkins family with arrangements. A visitation will be held Friday, July 22, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32312. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 1pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 624 Miccosukee Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32308 with burial at Tallahassee Memory Gardens following the service.
